In addition to repairing and maintaining existing thatches, R.V. Miller can replace old and worn thatched roofs with an entirely new one should you require it. The roofs that our thatchers in Dorset supply are comprised of two exceptional materials, which are:
Water Reed
Imported from Turkey, Hungary, and Romania, our Water Reed product is designed to be as long-lasting as possible. Our thatchers in Dorset will typically recommend such a product for most projects due to its unrivalled durability that will stand up to even the harshest British winter. If kept well-maintained, you can expect a Water Reed thatch to last anywhere from 20 to 50 years!
Wheat Reed
Just like with Water Reed, Wheat Reed has been used for centuries and can be found atop many properties across Dorset. Our thatchers will usually suggest Wheat Reed for properties where an old straw base layer is present or the structure of the building is simply too weak to support Water Reed. In the first instance, holes can form as a result of loosening spar bonds. In the latter instance, the entire roof can give way.
Aesthetically, there is very little difference between the two. If kept well-maintained, a Wheat Reed thatch will last between 15 and 25 years.
